Week 7 - Friday 4/26/1991 Recording "Grassheads". Wallace created a composite guitar track out of several takes from yesterday. Winegar thought the repetitious ending section was boring, though I felt otherwise. Puig and Winegar insisted that I was being entertained by the bass lines and not listening to the overall track. Winegar tried a few guitar/amp combinations, including a Strat into Vox AC-30, a Strat into my old Mascot amp (which blew up when he played through it), and a Strat into a Mesa Boogie head before settling on a Rickenbacker guitar into Fender Vibrolux. After a two hour break, the session continued with Gates singing the lead vocal part and Wallace constructing a composite track out of his takes. We dubbed some strange sound effects onto the tape, such as an answering machine recording of my Uncle Doug and a recording of Alan Watts giving a lecture. Note: today was Gates' first session with the vocal coach that Wallace had hired. |
